Somek & Associates Culture Day

  • Posted

On Wednesday 21st February staff at Somek & Associates baked, made and bought foodie treats to share that resonated with them in some way - from our own cultural background, childhood, places we’ve visited etc. This was a great way to raise much-needed funds for BURPS but also to celebrate our diversity - our staff members come from a range of cultural backgrounds including South Africa, Pakistan, France, Italy, Poland, Ireland, The Caribbean, Macedonia, Sri Lanka, as well as England.

Below are a few examples of the treats we enjoyed and why they were chosen;

Ajvar (pronounced: /ˈaɪvɑːr/;)

"A seasonal dish in Macedonia, always made in late summer and early autumn, just after the paprika harvest, when many households also store their own ajvar in jars for use throughout the winter season." - Dejana Koleva, Financial Controller.

Vegemite slices, hundreds and thousands slices, mini pavlovas

"They’re all delicious and from Australia!" - Joel Watson, Business Process Manager

Ginger cake and pineapple

"In celebration of my love of the Caribbean" - Alison Somek, MD

Koeksisters

"A traditional Afrikaner confectionery made of fried dough infused in syrup. Koeksisters are prepared by frying plaited dough strips in oil, then submersing the hot fried dough into ice cold sugar syrup. Koeksisters have a golden crunchy crust and liquid syrup centre, are very sticky and sweet – BAIE LEKKER!" - Leonie Dons, Case Handler

Melton mowbray pork pie

"A ‘Melton Mowbray’ pork pie, wrapped in Union Jack-inspired paper – the most British/English thing I could find!" - Russell Smith, Reports Team Proof Reader
