Introduction

I qualified in 2013 and worked as a rotational midwife at one of the largest maternity units in the UK. I have rotated around antenatal, postnatal and delivery areas; both low risk intrapartum care on the birthing centre, and the higher risk care on the main delivery suite. I elected to spend some time working within the trust continuity of care team that aims to provide continuity of care to service users. Midwives here are based in a community setting, focusing on antenatal care, postnatal care, parent education and also covering an on call service for the provision of intrapartum care to their specific caseload. This gave me valuable experience working in a community setting, an area that midwives do not routinely rotate to within the trust.

I am proficient in cannulation, venepuncture, perineal suturing and IV drug administration. I am trained to carry out NIPE examinations, presentation scanning and have a lot of experience working with students and new to post midwives to support their training. I am able to confidently work within each area of maternity, and have an excellent understanding and knowledge of the guidelines and policies that underpin the care provision in each area. On antenatal and postnatal areas I will lead a shift, managing the workload for myself, and other staff on shift. I am confident in obstetric emergencies and confident in supporting women through infant feeding choices. I pride myself on my communication skills and ability to quickly build trusting relationships with patients, their families and staff members alike. Since returning from maternity leave I have worked in both postnatal and delivery suite areas, navigated the significant changes that have occurred within our unit, and become proficient in using the new computerised system for documentation across maternity care. I feel very confident in intrapartum and postnatal care, as well as antenatal care provision.

I became actively involved in union work and became an RCM workplace steward in the months prior to my maternity leave. This involved a lot of work with management/HR, and liaising between different members of staff within the maternity department, including midwives, support workers and nursery nurses.  I  supported staff during some challenging times and then worked to communicate their issues and concerns in meetings with management, trying to find resolutions and address the rising concerns and the unrest that were happening due to a number of changes occurring within our maternity department and UK maternity services as a whole.

I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
