Introduction

I qualified as a General Nurse in 1983 and have worked in the areas of surgery, orthopaedic and intensive care. In 1985, I was employed as a clinical teacher before transitioning to a College and then University as a lecturer in nursing.  Since 2013, I have been working part-time for the Integrated Urgent Care Services (NHS 111) alongside my university role. These roles have complemented each other and allowed me to develop a wider body of knowledge and understanding concerning the complexities of working in the real world of healthcare.

Currently, I am the programme lead for the Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) programme, I have acquired in-depth knowledge and understanding of such a role and the high-risk decision-making and clinical reasoning that accompanies such a role.  My main level of teaching and support for students is at Masters level which requires a high level of criticality both in theory and in particular practice. Working within NHS 111, has enhanced my assessment, questioning, and critical thinking skills due to the nature of the work, telephone triaging.  I have also developed extensive experience and knowledge in using pathways and protocols. These techniques have to compensate for my visual senses (I am unable to see the patient) to enable me to make good quality and safe decisions.

During my time employed, I have developed and refined an extensive body of knowledge that incorporates the wider field of nursing.  People, patients, and situations do not present themselves within neat separate silos but act as an integrated whole.  My expanded experiences have helped me to develop a level of expertise within these areas.  My main area of clinical expertise that has developed over the years is within acute care nursing. Not only do I continue to have exposure in this area through my work with the NHS 111 service but I have led and taught on acute care modules within the University.  I have also written extensively on this subject.

In terms of my critical thinking and writing, I provide feedback on students' academic work which is of high quality, impartial and unbiased.  I have also been involved in writing reports, at student student-facing, University, and external levels.  I successfully applied for and was awarded the National Health Service England accreditation for the ACP programme.  Throughout my career, I have continued to update myself, this is a requirement by the professional body (Nursing and Midwifery Council).  For nurses to remain on the register all registrants are required to demonstrate evidence of professional update every 5 years.  I am also currently undertaking a PhD. I have the experience of working with external bodies, I am a member of the Advanced Clinical Practice group.  I am also an external examiner/ external assessor for external ACP programmes, being involved in quality assurance of programmes outside of my own institution.  I am also the Panel Chair for university validation events, both internal and external partners. Therefore, I am used to working with people from different backgrounds and abilities.

I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
