I am a registered nurse with significant clinical experience, having qualified in 2001. A large portion of that time has been spent in the Emergency Department. An equally large proportion, however, has been spent as a Hospital at Night practitioner, which has allowed me to gain a much broader experience of acute hospital nursing care than I otherwise would have.
The Clinical Site Manager/Hospital at Night role, also entails a managerial side, being the most senior person on site out of hours. This role required me to not only act as a clinical resource, but also as a managerial and professional leader. I have undertaken investigations of serious incidents and am competent in preparing root cause analysis documents.
Although my main area of expertise is the Emergency Department, I am also able to apply my knowledge and experience in many different ways, having completed courses in advanced assessment, clinical decision making and the nature of physical assessment at degree level. Clinical interventions that I am competent to undertake are, among other things, administering pain relief, advanced wound care, venepuncture and cannulation, male and female catheterisation and catheter care, arterial blood gas sampling and interpretation, triage and plastering. As part of my ongoing assessment of patients, a knowledge of chronic conditions and their impact is also required. I am competent in risk assessment for and prevention of falls and pressure ulcers.
I have always considered myself as a role model and an exemplary leader. By exacting high standards myself, I have engendered fellowship in my teams to do the same. I am articulate, with excellent communication skills both written and verbal, I am aware of the standards as laid out by the NMC for documentation, professionalism and conduct, and am able to ascertain when they have not taken place to a proficient degree. I have attended NMC hearings and coroners courts for my own education, and have facilitated my staff doing the same. I have given evidence in court and received good feedback on my performance.
I am also an advanced life support instructor which entails not only being a clinical expert, but being able to stand up in front of people and speak clearly and facilitate a room and enhance the learning of a group of different professionals.
Since 2018 I have been working as an Associate Trainer with Somek & Associates, helping to train a range of new experts.
I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
