I qualified as a registered nurse in 1986. From this time until 1995, I was employed as a Paediatric nurse in acute hospital settings.
In 1991, I qualified as a Health Visitor. From 1995-2008 I worked for Dudley PCT as a GP attached Health Visitor carrying my own caseload. During this time I developed my skills working with young families, ethnic minorities and post natal anxiety. These years laid down the foundations of understanding family dynamics in the community.
From 2008-2012 I worked for Solihull Primary Care Trust moving to a corporate way of working within a defined geographical area crossing boundaries into neighbouring trusts. This was a very challenging time in my career, however it did widen my scope enormously, particularly with working in the community with complex families and developing my skills in inter-agency working. My work at that time exposed me to domestic violence, maternal mental health issues, alcohol and drug abuse, housing issues and child protection including the writing of court reports. In this trust I received some excellent child protection training.
In 2012 I moved to work as a Health Visitor to work for Worcestershire Health and Care Trust. I continued to work within a corporate team, though with my own caseload, in a geographical area. Following a cut in service in 2016 and a reduction in health visitor numbers, my role has become more of a "needs assessment" one, whilst continuing to work with the more complex clients. The universal service is increasingly being carried out by other members of the skill mix team. I advise and monitor work delivered by the skill mix team; I also mentor nurse students on work placement.
The area I work in is very diverse with regards to both the ethnic mix and socio-economic status of the clients; it is an interesting and challenging place to work.
I continue to receive excellent training both in-house and externally, particularly in child protection, learning from serious case reviews and domestic abuse. I also receive training regularly on practice related issues.
In 2013 I completed restorative supervision training and have been delivering supervision to Health Visitors in my own organisation and for the Programme as a consultant to Health Visitors in London.
I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
