I qualified as a registered nurse in 2000 and subsequently worked on a general medical and surgical ward before I decided to specialise in renal medicine. Over a five year period I developed my knowledge in all aspects of care planning and delivery to a cohort of patients with complex medical conditions. I managed the ward on a shift basis and was the health and safety link nurse.
I then moved to accident and emergency nursing where I have worked ever since, developing my skills and knowledge and advancing my career. My current role as Lead Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) involves diagnosing and treating adults and children with a wide range of minor illness and injuries in a busy inner city hospital. I also assess, diagnose and treat patients that have been referred in to us by GP’s, NHS 111 and Minor Injury Units. I am the mental health link nurse for the department and work on the steering committee. I am also involved in a project with the NHS 111 service to redirect patients away from the acute hospital.
I manage a team of 10 ENPs completing their appraisals, sickness reviews and shift rotas. I also take part in regular in house training to keep my skills and knowledge up to date. I work closely alongside orthopaedic consultants since a reconfiguration to the department during the Covid 19 pandemic. This has allowed me to advance my knowledge in ongoing management of fractures and orthopaedic injuries.
I am a non medical nurse prescriber and attend regular prescribing updates.
Within emergency medicine, my areas of expertise are (adults and children) ;
• Musculo skeletal Injury
• Wound assessment and management
• Head injury assessment and management
• ENT presentations
• Opthalmology emergencies
• Safeguarding children
• Mental Health presentations
• Trauma
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
