 BSc Mental Health Nursing

Specialisms

Community psychiatric nurse practitioner, psychiatric liaison nurse

Introduction

I qualified as a Mental Health nurse specialising in adult mental health in 2014, having worked in both inpatient and community settings. I began as an inpatient staff nurse and was quickly promoted to clinical practice lead. In this capacity, I managed multiple acute wards and a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) as duty senior nurse and bed manager. This ensured legal and safe admission to psychiatric wards for persons experiencing mental health difficulties. In addition, it involved overseeing legal documentation under the Mental Health Act, medication administration, risk assessments, and nursing reviews.

In 2016, I transitioned from inpatient to community setting where I continued to support vulnerable patients living with severe and enduring mental health illness and commodities. I maintain my clinical skills through working bank shifts on various psychiatric wards with acutely unwell patients exhibiting psychotic symptoms and incredibly challenging behaviour. Further, I would support the nursing team in the community with managing a clinic administering long-acting antipsychotic depot injections to patients.

Since 2022, I have expanded my experience to psychiatric liaison in emergency departments in London, where I assess clients in crisis, often following suicide attempts, self-harm incidents or drug misuse. I collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to formulate risk assessment, care, and treatment plan for safe discharge. Additionally, I review patients on transfer from psychiatric hospitals requiring mental health review alongside their physical health concerns.

My overall knowledge, skills and ability has been a varied mix of inpatient, community and crisis management coupled with clinical leadership skills. The opportunity to work in various setting has increased my knowledge and understanding of the clinical standards, legal framework and quality of care expected.

I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
