BSc (Hons) Nurse Practitioner, RGN, Independent Non-Medical Prescriber
I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1981, working in Accident and Emergency departments in both London and Cheshire. I went on to work as a Nursing Officer for ICI in a chemical plant in Runcorn before entering the world of Practice Nursing in 1992, where I worked for over 5 years before accepting a post in School Nursing in Cheshire. During that time I completed my Family Planning training in Manchester in 1998 and then in 2002 attended Lancaster University for three years where I studied to become a qualified Nurse Practitioner whilst also working within General Practice.
Since 1998 I have continued to also run a Family Planning clinic, as a Specialist Contraceptive and Sexual Health Nurse for a Primary Care Trust. This role requires, advising, counselling and teaching individuals of all ages regarding contraception and sexual health. I also fit and remove contraceptive coils and implant devices and diaphragms as well as carry out cytology. I teach the application of the chosen methods of contraception, re-appraise as necessary with follow up reviews of clients. I also take an active role in the training of nurses and midwives.
Between 2006 – 2012, I worked in a General Practice in Congleton as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Since 2012 I became a freelance Advanced Nurse Practitioner locuming for General Practices in and outside of Cheshire, carrying out comprehensive assessments of undifferentiated, undiagnosed patients via history taking and physical examination in order to determine a differential and then final diagnosis. I also prescribe as an Independent non-medical prescriber, plan ongoing patient treatment and future clinical management. I request investigations and interpret the subsequent results and refer patients on to secondary care for specialist opinion and / or other agencies as appropriate. I work independently but also as part of the practice healthcare team and have expertise in complex decision making and problem solving.
Since 2007 I have regularly inserted and removed coils within the domains of Family Planning clinics and General Practice and more recently provide a insertion and removal service of these devices and implants in General Practices in Cheshire.
I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
