ITU & Critical Care, Recovery, Post Surgical Nursing, Pre-op Assessment
I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1998 and, since then, have gained experience in various cardiac, recovery and critical care environments.
My current position is that of Band 7 Team Leader for SJW & Lanesborough wing recovery units at St George’s Hospital. Recovery is a large busy unit, with over 50 staff. I write reports on and investigate any clinical adverse incidents (Datix). My most recent project has included the set up and staffing of a new enhanced recovery unit (PACU), working closely with Intensive Care to develop and enhance the nursing skills of the recovery team. With the consultants, I have developed new care pathways, protocols and policies.
In addition to currently developing my management skills, I also have the clinical skills to coordinate shifts and work clinically within the enhanced recovery team. Within my current role, due to my clinical experience and ICU background, I am able to provide expertise and guidance in both complex and high risk cases to the nursing team.
In March 2020, during lockdown, I made the decision to cut my maternity leave short and return to work to become part of the Covid 19 ICU team to care for level three patients and update my ICU skills. With the clinical ICU lead, we embarked on the difficult task of turning cardiac theatres into a make shift Covid ICUs. We turned each of the four theatre rooms into mini three bedded ICUs. During that time, I worked clinically with the ventilated Covid patients. I monitored and assessed vital signs, life support equipment, administered intravenous drugs. I provided support and training for the surge nurses redeployed from theatres and the wards into ICU. I worked in the Covid ICU until June 2020, when I returned to recovery in order to take on the Band 7 role.
I have advanced experience and expertise in caring for the critically ill ventilated patient and providing post-operative care for a variety of level one to three patients. I am also able to work on my own initiative and as part of a multidisciplinary team. At all times I ensure that the policies and procedures are adhered to with the safety and wellbeing of the patient as my main concern. By teaching and training junior staff I ensure the continued professional development of myself and my team. I both attend and organise regular training updates, striving to stay updated on in my area of expertise.
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
