I qualified as an OT in 1998. My early roles involved working in an acute NHS trust, developing skills in Orthopaedics, conducting functional assessments of patients who had sustained traumatic injuries and those who had received elective surgery. I identified rehabilitation goals and assistive equipment to maximise function and liaised with the medical team in discharge planning, identifying care needs and funding routes.
I then moved into the community as a Care Manager/Occupational Therapist within a local authority, conducting functional assessments of adults and children within their home environment, establishing occupational performance, making recommendations for assistive devices and adaptation to their home environment. In addition, I assessed care needs and costed, set up and monitored care packages.
During my career, I have worked in vehicle adaptations as a specialist occupational therapist working for a national charity. I travelled the UK, assessing disabled adults and children, making recommendations for adapted vehicles for both drivers and passengers. As a project manager, I worked closely with the client and automotive engineers in the ergonomic build of hi-tech vehicles, which allowed individuals with life changing injuries to drive from their wheelchair.
I also gained significant experience in vocational rehabilitation, conducting assessments with individuals unable to work as a result of their health due to a diagnosis of chronic pain, anxiety/depression and/or cardio-respiratory conditions.
I have experience of working in the private sector as an independent OT, completing initial needs assessments (under the rehabilitation code), vocational assessments, as well as a rehabilitation case manager, specialising in orthopaedic and psychological injuries, conducting assessments of injured clients, developing rehabilitation plans, costing treatment and/or equipment, before presenting to the relevant parties for approval. Ongoing management included arranging and monitoring treatment and/or rehabilitation and where appropriate liaise with employers, developing and monitoring return to work plans.
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
