Neurological Conditions, Acquired & Traumatic Brain Injury & Stroke
I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 2009 and have worked in a broad range of clinical settings within the NHS. I specialised in neurology in 2013, and I currently work in a Community Acquired Brain Injury Service within the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The service accepts adults with both traumatic and non-traumatic acquired brain injuries and is goal focused. As part of an interdisciplinary team we support individuals to return to their occupational roles which includes vocational rehabilitation. I receive clinical supervision from neuropsychology which has enabled me to further develop my knowledge and skills with respect to cognition, neuro-behavioural issues and mental capacity, all of which are common issues within my current complex caseload.
Prior to relocation to Cumbria, I worked in a specialist post in stroke services in Morecambe Bay Hospitals NHS Trust. This service included working across the stroke pathway from acute, rehabilitation and community settings. Working within stroke services has enabled me to understand the aetiology of this disease and the multiple effects it can have on an individual's functional abilities, physically, cognitively and emotionally.
I have also worked within a busy stroke early supported discharge team. This service was also measured by key performance indicators to meet the national stroke guidelines. My role entailed working under pressure and I required strong communication and time management skills.
When I initially qualified as an occupational therapist, I had the opportunity to undertake a mixed rotational post, I worked in community rehabilitation, general medicine, trauma and orthopaedic care, acute and community mental health, stroke and aids and major adaptations which included specialist seating. This rotational post enabled me to develop my knowledge and skills in a wide range of settings and continues to help support my current practice.
Throughout my career I have and continue to work closely with a number of professionals including neuropsychology, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and case managers. I maintain my professional development and HCPC standards by attending relevant training and I regularly educate students.
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
