BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing, MSc Advanced Clinical Practice
Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner experienced in Level 2 and Level 3 care.
I qualified as a nurse in 2003 and in 2004 started working in Neonatal. I completed my Neonatal qualified in speciality course in 2005/2006. In 2007 I moved to work in a large tertiary Neonatal unit in Canada for a year, before returning to the UK to continue my career within Neonatal nursing. Over the years I have worked in Level 2/3 (LNU/NICU) within London and the home counties, progressing from Staff nurse to Senior staff nurse, Sister, Practice Development Nurse, before eventually choosing to start my Advanced Clinical Practice Masters. I completed my Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP) course in 2016 and have been working as an ANNP since, initially within a NICU (Level 3 neonatal unit) and currently in a LNU (Level 2 neonatal unit).
My role includes caring for sick term babies, babies with congenital anomalies and preterm babies across LNU, postnatal ward and delivery suite. I am competent in history taking, clinical assessment, diagnoses, management and advanced clinical skills, including cannulation, venepuncture, central line insertion, intubation and lumbar puncture, Cerebral Function Monitoring (CFM), X-ray, brain MRI interpretation and cranial ultrasound scanning and interpretation. I am a non-medical prescriber, and can prescribe most medications required by babies during their stay on the neonatal unit. I can undertake ward rounds independently, admit and discharge babies. The care I deliver is always discussed with the consultant on call.
I am involved in teaching nurses and junior doctors, both theory and practical skills. I attend deliveries and can provide or support junior staff with any resuscitation or assistance required. I am confident in discussing good clinical nursing practices within neonatal units as well as understanding good/ best practices within resuscitation and advanced procedures in neonates.
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
