BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1996 and have specialised in the field of physical disability throughout my career, including management of patients with various conditions including recovery from general medical issues and surgical procedures, orthopaedic conditions including hip fractures and amputations, terminal illness and elderly care. I have been involved in carrying out Occupational Therapy assessments of service users and carers on behalf of Social Services departments, requiring minor and major adaptations and equipment provision, packages of care and rehousing.
For many years I have managed and supervised Occupational Therapists and more recently have been involved in the supervision of other health professionals involved in Intermediate Care rehabilitation. I have also been involved in educating and training Occupational Therapists, students, other health professionals and carers.
My current role as Clinical Business Manager for Somek and Associates enables me to liaise with Clients and Experts on a daily basis advising on the most appropriate type of report and expert required for individual cases and progressing new enquiries.
Medico legal casework I have undertaken has included Clients with Cauda Equina Syndrome and end stage renal failure. I frequently assess and report on the care and equipment needs for Claimants with pre-existing conditions including dementia, especially with older people. I have also undertaken a number of cases where Claimants have suffered significant complications following childbirth and I am experienced in assessing and reporting on past childcare costs for new borns and infants.
In addition to my current role, I provide pro-bono Occupational Therapy advice to care givers who care for two dementia sufferers and to a lady with chronic health conditions. I also undertake work with a local architect where I advise on bathroom design for disabled Clients on an ad-hoc basis.
I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers, aiming to maintain a 50:50 split of Claimant and Defendant instructions. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
