    Adults with Physical Disabilities, Orthopaedics, Neurology, Complex Care, Amputation, Continence


    I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1981 and have over 35 years' experience of working with a variety of client groups including children, but primarily with adults who have a physical disability including:

    • Trauma & Orthopaedics including upper & lower limb elective surgery, spinal surgery, fractures,hand injuries, amputation
    • Neurology including brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Frederick’s Ataxia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease
    • Congenital problems and birth injury including Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy
    • Multiple organ failure: following acute illness
    • Bowel and bladder disorder 
    • Chronic pain, depression, and anxiety and working with individuals who have a learning disability and also have physical health difficulties

    I have many years' experience working in a broad range of statutory and private healthcare settings and making comprehensive assessments of clients with disabilities, and make recommendations regarding care and therapeutic needs, specialist equipment and adaptations, and housing needs. I have experience of working alongside care teams/agencies and have implemented and monitored care packages.

    I have a particular interest and have experience of assessing individuals with bowel and/or bladder injury and have completed a degree module and work experience in this area.  I have experience of carrying out moving and handling training for carers and care homes.

    I am an inclusive design advisor (pro bono) for the Civic Trust regarding the suitability of building schemes nominated for Trust awards.

    I also work in a voluntary capacity for Dart Sailability – an organisation that enables individuals with a disability to experience sailing and boating. I advised them on matters to do with disability and in particular moving and handling. 

    Medico-Legal experience:
    I have completed expert witness work as an occupational therapist since 2006 and have given evidence in Court.  I have written many reports for quantum purposes on Loss of Services, care and Occupational Therapy, and have been instructed by both Claimant and Defendant solicitors and insurers. I have also written reports on breach of duty related to Occupational Therapy matters. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and giving evidence in court and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
