Registered Nurse, Non Medical Prescriber
I qualified as an Enrolled Nurse in 1977 and converted to a 1st level Registered Nurse in 1995.
Emergency medicine has remained the basis of my progression throughout my career, from junior nurse, to service manager for emergency services. I have worked across the acute sector, private sector and independent sector, through a range of services such as out of hours, 111, GP services, A&E and Walk in Centres.
I have maintained my clinical skills throughout my career for example, one of my senior management roles involved investigating incidents, accidents, falls and medicine errors within a variety of environments including prisons, residential and nursing homes as well as the A&E department. I would use my communication skills to gather information, investigate and then objectively review and analyse evidence. Having the clinical understanding as well as the legal and procedural understanding allowed me to influence a change in practice and provide appropriate support to those who required it.
I currently work as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and non-medical prescriber in traditional and non-traditional settings, managing adults and children in both primary and emergency care. In addition to regular NHS clinical shifts, I also work in the Events Medicine industry where the threat of litigation and the provision of emergency care work hand in hand.
In all roles I independently assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and discharge or refer, and work closely with multidisciplinary teams and colleagues in speciality services to ensure patients are reviewed by the most appropriate service for their needs.
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
