Frequently asked questions
What is a litigant in person?
A litigant in person (LiP) is someone who represents themselves in legal proceedings without a solicitor or barrister.
Can I still use an expert witness without a solicitor?
Yes. You can instruct an expert witness directly. Our team will support you through the process and help make it as straightforward as possible.
What does an expert witness do?
An expert witness provides an independent report on a specific area related to your case such as care needs, rehabilitation, or medical treatment. Their role is to give an objective opinion based on their professional expertise.
What types of cases can your experts help with?
Our experts have supported people in appeals involving Education and Healthcare Plans (EHCPs), benefit decisions, matrimonial proceedings, and concerns around care standards in hospitals or care homes.
What is a Letter of Instruction?
This is the document that tells the expert what you’d like them to comment on. We can help you prepare this. It should include a summary of your situation, any documents you want them to review, the deadline for the report, and your available budget.
Do I need legal knowledge to do this?
No, but it helps to access guidance where possible. We’ll explain the process in plain language, and you can also seek free legal advice from organisations like Citizens Advice, law centres or pro bono legal groups.
How much does a report cost?
Fees vary depending on the type of report and complexity of the case. We’ll give you a fee estimate before any work begins.
