My journey into prosthetics and orthotics started subconsciously when I was young, inspired by my mum who was born without her right arm from the elbow down and has worn a prosthetic arm her entire life. Growing up around prosthetics gave me an early understanding of the impact they can have on a person’s life.
During my A-levels, I realised I was someone who naturally engages well with others — something I’ve always enjoyed and believe is essential in this field. Although I initially thought the four-year P&O course was a bit longer than I wanted to study at university, I committed to it wholeheartedly.
I had a fantastic time during my studies, especially during my placements in Dublin at Cappagh Hospital and in Wirral at the Limb Centre. It was there, as a 17-year-old during a work experience placement, that I decided to pursue a career in prosthetics and orthotics.
My career has taken me through a variety of healthcare settings, including Northampton, Kettering, Swindon, Carlisle, Leeds, Watford, and Ipswich. Traveling so much at the beginning was challenging, but it exposed me to different specialties, healthcare systems, and governance structures, giving me a broader understanding of how healthcare services are delivered and how they can vary. I’ve worked in fast-paced clinics, seeing many patients and learning valuable lessons from each encounter.
A significant aspect of my experience has come from working on the manufacturing side of prosthetics and orthotics. I believe this gives me a well-rounded perspective on device design, fitting, and functionality.
In 2016, I founded Great Gait, which has allowed me to focus on providing patient-centred, holistic care outside of the NHS. Building this company has given me the freedom to prioritise personalised treatment approaches and to better serve my patients.
To further develop my skills, I completed an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, gaining expertise in image interpretation, lower limb triage, and diagnosis. I also earned a diploma in foot health, which enables me to treat basic foot conditions and expand my scope of practice. I believe that this broad academic background helps me better understand my patients’ needs and work collaboratively with other health and medical professionals.
I approach each patient with a holistic mindset, considering their long-term needs and how their Prosthetic or orthotic interventions can improve their quality of life. My experience as an expert witness has strengthened my critical thinking, making me more mindful of how devices can benefit patients over their lifetime and how their needs may evolve.
Overall, I am passionate about delivering comprehensive, patient-focused care and continuously expanding my knowledge and skills to improve outcomes for those I serve.
