Professional Experience
I qualified as a nurse in 1993, specialising in neonatal intensive care, and subsequently qualified as a midwife in 1997. I have practised continuously since, with clinical experience across both hospital and community settings. My areas of special interest include neonatal care and intrapartum care within midwifery-led environments. I have extensive experience managing obstetric emergencies and supporting families from diverse backgrounds throughout pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period.
My current clinical role is based in hospital maternity, where I undertake responsibilities including induction of labour, IV cannulation and administration of IV medications, fetal monitoring (CTG and intermittent), perineal assessment and suturing, and escalation of clinical concerns. I support women in making informed decisions regarding their maternity care and carry out detailed clinical assessments of both maternal and neonatal wellbeing. In addition to my clinical duties, I deliver structured training to multidisciplinary teams on high-risk topics including Never Events, preeclampsia, postpartum haemorrhage, and hyponatraemia in intrapartum care. I am also responsible for conducting audits, undertaking risk reviews, and drafting evidence-based clinical guidelines for the maternity unit. These include protocols for the management of shoulder dystocia and the use of water during labour.
Professional Development
I maintain up-to-date clinical competencies through annual training in obstetric emergencies and maternity-related topics, including pelvic health, sepsis, and neonatal resuscitation. I completed the Neonatal Life Support Course again in June 2022 and was also selected to undertake the training to become an NLS Instructor myself. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Neonatal Care, covering newborn examination and resuscitation. Following this, I was invited to join the NHS England Jaundice Focus Group as part of the Avoiding Term Admissions Into Neonatal Units Programme. My contribution led to the publication of an article in 2017 on the use of transcutaneous bilirubinometers for assessing neonatal jaundice.
Medico Legal Experience
I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
