Professional Experience

I qualified as a registered general nurse in 1986, and as a midwife in 1992. My clinical career spans all areas of midwifery, including antenatal and postnatal care, community services, pregnancy assessment units, and labour wards. I have worked across hospital and community settings, including team midwifery models that provided continuity of care to defined caseloads. Since 2021, I have held a bank position as a Band 6 midwife at my local NHS Trust, following 29 years in a substantive post. From 2024, I am often the shift-lead in the pregnancy assessment centre and day assessment unit, because of increasing demand/staff skill mix. My clinical practice includes caring for women with complex health needs requiring high dependency obstetric care, working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and participating in clinical review forums investigating adverse incidents.

Professional Development

I hold a postgraduate certificate in the care of the critically ill childbearing woman (2012), equipping me to care for critically unwell women with high dependency needs during the pregnancy continuum. I regularly attend fetal monitoring workshops, focusing on the physiological basis of fetal heart rate patterns and escalation protocols. In 2025, I completed the CTG Masterclass on intrapartum fetal assessment and management of hypoxic risk. I am trained in the management of neonatal hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, and jaundice, having completed ATAIN training in 2018 in partnership with NHS Improvement and NHS England. In 2015, I trained as an ALERT instructor and delivered training on the early recognition and management of clinical deterioration, supporting staff in acute care decision-making, clinical governance principles, and inter-professional collaboration. From 2009 to 2022, I was an associate lecturer with the Open University, delivering modules on research, law, and policy in health and social care, with a focus on nursing and social work.

Medico Legal Experience

I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
