Maria Buaki Sogo, Registered Midwife

Professional Experience

I am a dual-qualified Registered Nurse and Midwife, qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2007 and a Registered Midwife in 2015. I began my career in Spain, working as an A&E resuscitation nurse before relocating to the UK in 2010. Since then, I have held both substantive and agency roles across multiple NHS trusts, including work as a theatre nurse in trauma and elective surgery, and as a midwife in low-risk and high-risk maternity settings.

My midwifery practice includes antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, emergency obstetric management, and post-operative care following caesarean sections. I have worked across rotational, community, caseload, and homebirth midwifery models, and have experience in research nursing and midwifery. My most recent substantive post was as a Consultant Midwife prior to commencing my PhD.

I continue to work clinically through agency placements, undertaking approximately 2-4 shifts per month primarily in obstetric theatres and maternity units across London and the Southeast.

In my NMC role I review nursing cases. I am part of a team of nurses and midwives with a breadth of clinical experience providing clinical advice during fitness to practise processes, focussing on public safety and review of registrants’ clinical practice.

Professional Development

I hold an MSc in Research in Midwifery Studies and am currently undertaking a PhD focused on improving clinical practice through research. I previously served as Lead Nurse for North Thames Genomic Medicine, where I led regional initiatives to integrate genetic testing into routine NHS care, reporting to NHS England and Improvement. I have also worked as a Lecturer in Adult Nursing, delivering modules in applied physiology and maternal-newborn care for nursing apprenticeships. I am fluent in Spanish, Catalan/Valenciano, and English.
