Professional Experience
After qualifying as an occupational therapist in 1988, I worked in a wide range of acute and rehabilitation settings in the UK, Australia, and South Africa. Acquired brain injury has been my main passion for many years. Consequently, I have worked predominately in the field of traumatic brain injury and stroke. After working as a head occupational therapist and neurology lecturer, I now work as a care and occupational therapy expert and specialist neurological occupational therapist.
My current case work involves the detailed assessment of clients with neurological, physical, or psychological problems, predominantly in traumatic brain injury and stroke. Much of my work revolves around complicated personal injury and clinical negligence cases that have aggravating factors. I employ cognitive compensatory strategies and encourage engagement in a variety of activities, including vocational activities, to facilitate a return to the clients’ premorbid activities.
Professional Development
Inspired to undertake further study, I completed an MSc in Neurorehabilitation with a dissertation that examined executive dysfunction following traumatic brain injury in 1996. Wishing to explore the wider context of the psychological and behavioural impact of brain injury culminated in an MA in Psychotherapy and a Psychology PhD.
I also maintain my professional development and HCPC standards by attending relevant training.
Medico Legal Experience
I have worked as a medico-legal consultant expert for Somek & Associates since 2001, undertaking hundreds of care and OT assessments. I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses. I have experience giving oral evidence in court and have been highly recommended by both Claimant and Defendant lawyers and counsel.
