Professional Experience

I qualified as an occupational therapist in 1998 from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle and have spent the majority of my career in the field of adult community rehabilitation.

I work as an independent occupational therapist, assessing clients with a wide range of conditions. My referrals are mainly generated from case managers to assess clients who have sustained complex injuries following catastrophic accidents. These conditions include, but are not limited to, orthopaedic injuries, brain injuries and chronic pain. I am required to assess and understand the functional impact of their injuries and set client-centred goals. This can involve liaising with support workers and the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure a consistent approach. I also work closely with equipment companies and architects to optimise clients’ environments and their ability to function within them. I also accept referrals from private clients to support with PIP applications, equipment, vocational needs and condition management. I have a special interest in postural management and the role this plays in function, pain relief and pressure management and undertake training in this area to maintain my skills.

I am the preferred provider for the local SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Association) branch for veterans who require assessment and provision of equipment and adaptations. I contribute on a regular basis to a blog for Opera Beds on various topics in relation to posture, equipment and recommendations.

In January 2021, I became an Associate Trainer for Somek and Associates which involves recruitment and training of new experts. Service development is a key part of the role to ensure high standards are maintained. I was promoted to the role of Deputy Quantum Quality Assurance & Training Lead in June 2023. I regularly contribute to journals about expert witness work and attend conferences to raise awareness of the role.

Professional Development

In 2021 I jointly led a session at the British Association of Hand Therapists conference on consent and the implications of this on professional practice. I have presented at the Royal College of Occupational Therapist’s Annual Conference, several OTAC conferences outlining the role of occupational therapy and expert witness work and NAIDEX.

I also maintain my professional development and HCPC standards by attending relevant training.

Medico Legal Experience

I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedures Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses. I am trained in both quantum and liability cases and have given oral evidence in a coroner's court as an expert witness.
