Professional Experience
I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1981 and began my career on an acute medical ward. This was followed by working in various clinical areas where I was able to gain a broad experience. From 2000 to 2010, I was employed in a private hospital, gaining insight into private sector healthcare. Concurrently, between 2003 and 2005, I worked in the cardiology department in an NHS hospital, further developing my clinical expertise.
In 2007, I moved into general practice as a part-time practice nurse and also held a school nursing post in a boarding school until 2013. I currently work four days per week in general practice, where I manage chronic disease clinics for asthma, COPD, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. I have a specific interest in lipid management. My duties include cervical cytology, contraception advice, sexual health assessments, and routine childhood immunisations. I carry out phlebotomy, ear irrigation, ECGs, and wound care, including post-operative dressings and suture removal. I routinely assess and treat minor illnesses and injuries and make appropriate referrals. I administer travel and other prescribed vaccinations, coordinate flu clinics, and provide lifestyle and weight management advice.
I assist a GP with in-house minor surgical procedures and have developed skills in dermatology and early identification of skin cancers. I also supervise student nurses and teach medical students within the practice. My role has expanded to include delegated physical examinations, particularly in the context of ward rounds in care homes, where I assess and manage acute clinical presentations. I was also involved in the delivery of the local COVID-19 vaccination programme.
Professional Development
I maintain my clinical professional development by attending training relevant to my clinical area.
Medico Legal Experience
I have served as a Justice of the Peace since 1990, with experience in both adult criminal and family courts. I qualified as a chairperson in 1998 and am familiar with courtroom procedures and the scrutiny of expert evidence. I have acted as a magistrate appraiser and sat on selection panels for new magistrates. I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
