Frequently asked questions
Are your experts actively practising?
All of our experts continue to practise clinically, either within statutory services or independent settings. Each expert is required to have a minimum of seven years’ post-qualification experience and must be registered with either the NMC or HCPC.
All experts also undertake a structured induction and ongoing CPD programme, specifically tailored to the demands of medico-legal work. This includes:
- The role and responsibilities of the expert witness
- Civil Procedure Rules and Practice Direction 35
- Report writing and advanced report writing techniques
- Expert discussions and joint statements
- Law for Experts (England & Wales) and Law for Experts (Scotland)
- Witness familiarisation and courtroom skills (delivered in partnership with Bond Solon)
In addition to their clinical and medico-legal expertise, our experts also support legal professionals through training. Somek & Associates offers free training for solicitors across a wide range of quantum and liability clinical specialisms. These expert-led sessions are delivered via webinar or in person and are designed to support legal practice and professional development. They enhance understanding of clinical realities and strengthen the quality of medico-legal dialogue between experts and solicitors.
Can you support me in selecting the expert best suited to my enquiry?
Based on the details you provide about the case, our Clinical Business Management team will recommend the most appropriate expert(s) available to meet your specific requirements.
While we do not offer case-specific supervision on active matters, we ensure consistency and quality through general training, reflective learning on closed cases, and ongoing professional development. This approach means that every report—regardless of the expert’s level of experience—is produced to the same high standard of clarity, accuracy, and medico-legal rigour.
What type of instructions do you accept?
Whether you are instructing on behalf of a claimant or defendant, our experts deliver reports that are clear, impartial, and court-ready, with the flexibility to support international claims and proceedings in different jurisdictions.
What types of reports do you offer?
We offer a comprehensive suite of procedurally complaint or advisory reports tailored to the requirements of the different courts and jurisdiction. Each report is proportionate to the complexity of the case and aligned with the specific needs of our clients. The professions we service are as follows;
How quickly can I get a report?
For quantum reports when an assessment of the claimant is required, we aim to provide the report within 6-8 weeks from the date of the assessment. A full liability report will typically be submitted within 4-6 weeks from receipt of your instructions and Limited Screening Reports (LSR’s) will be submitted within 2-4 weeks of instruction.
What information do I need to provide about the case prior to requesting an expert’s availability?
We ask that as much information about the case is provided as soon as possible to ensure we can confirm the expert’s clinical background is suited to the particular case, along with checking for any potential conflict of interest.
Can I reserve an expert even if I don’t need to instruct them right away?
Yes, you can reserve an expert even if you don’t need to instruct them right away. However, please note that the timeframes may be subject to change depending on when instructions are likely to be received.
How much will a report cost and can you provide fee estimates?
At the point of responding to your enquiry, we will attach a copy of our fee schedule, which will indicate the typical hours required to prepare the type of report requested. We can provide upfront fee estimates for all quantum and liability reports, but as all cases are individual, we will liaise with you further regarding your requirements and other aspects of the case. Our Limited Screening reports (LSR’s) work on a fixed fee basis and if applicable, we will provide a copy of our LSR fee schedule when responding to your initial enquiry.
What are your payment terms?
We offer a variety of payment terms and can provide more information upon request.
