What is an expert witness?
An expert witness is someone with knowledge or experience in a particular field beyond that expected of the layman. Expert witnesses play a fundamental role within the judicial system by providing opinion evidence to assist the courts in reaching decisions, predominantly in civil litigation, and specifically clinical negligence and personal injury claims.

Do I have to have previous medico-legal experience?
No previous medico-legal experience is necessary. We offer access to an extensive range of training materials and very competitively priced training packages, tailored to your area of expertise. No previous medico-legal experience is necessary to join Somek & Associates. What matters most is your clinical expertise, professionalism, and willingness to learn.
We provide access to a comprehensive, structured induction and ongoing CPD programme, specifically tailored to the demands of medico-legal work. This includes:
- The role and responsibilities of the expert witness
- Civil Procedure Rules and Practice Direction 35
- Report writing and advanced report writing techniques
- Expert discussions and joint statements
- Law for Experts (England & Wales) and Law for Experts (Scotland)
- Witness familiarisation and courtroom skills (delivered in partnership with Bond Solon)
Our training is delivered through a mix of live webinars, on-demand materials, and interactive sessions, all competitively priced and tailored to your clinical discipline. You’ll be supported at every stage, ensuring you build confidence and competence as a medico-legal expert.
Am I ready to join Somek & Associates now?
The essential criteria includes;
- At least 7 –10 years post qualification experience.
- Working within clinical/case management practice with the intention to continue for the next 5 years.
- Have time within the working week to liaise with Somek support staff and solicitors.
