I qualified as a mental health nurse in 1997 and during my career, I have also developed skills that fit in with those traditionally attributed to general nurses. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience in mental health, Court liaison and adult social care settings.

During my early career, I obtained significant experience in mental health settings, particularly in psychiatric intensive care and secure mental health settings for both adults and adolescents. I was an A Grade instructor in preventing and managing aggression and violence and taught skills from de-escalation and breakaway techniques to higher levels of containing a violent person safely.  I was also involved in changing negative perceptions and cultures when looking after patients who may challenge other services. I have also been involved in investigating when unnecessary force has been used during restraints and whether techniques have been used that are deemed to be outside of those recognised as safe.  I have provided expert advice to the Courts, both for adults and youths with mental health problems and acted as an advisor to the Magistrates and have given both written and verbal evidence in Court.

For many years, I have been in senior management roles and have predominantly worked in the private nursing and residential social care sector.  I have managed large homes (91 beds being the largest) and have also managed the managers of homes in a region. For the most part, I have acted as a “turn-around manager”. I have experience of not only looking after people in care homes but of evaluating and raising standards in nursing homes. As a result, I have acquired extensive skills in investigating breaches of duty of nursing home care or inadequate care/neglect.
I have a passion for end of life care and believe it is important that standards are especially high at this time of life. I regularly administer controlled drugs to this patient group.

Currently I am self-employed and working as a compliance consultant for “Inadequate” or “Requires Improvement” CQC rated care homes.  In addition, I  still undertake many clinical shifts in nursing homes, including general nursing and residential homes, dementia homes, mental health care homes and EMI nursing homes. I have extensive experience of safeguarding, Mental Capacity Act and DoLS. I have significant  experience of undertaking assessments and report writing in various formats. I pride myself on keeping up to date with knowledge and embrace training and learning opportunities.

I accept instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
