- Clinical Physiotherapy Specialist in Amputee Management & Prosthetic Rehabilitation
I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1991 from the The Queens College, Glasgow. Since 2000 I have specialised in the field of amputee management and prosthetic rehabilitation and I am currently employed by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist at Stanmore Prosthetic and Amputee Rehabilitation Centre (PARC). I carry a large clinical caseload and am responsible for the supervision of other physiotherapy staff and students.
My clinical caseload is varied, including management of complex paediatric, adult and elderly
patients who have acquired lower and / or upper limb amputations as well as those with congenital
limb deficiencies. I have a particular interest in management of amputation secondary to trauma or cancer and specialise in the rehabilitation of high level amputations such as hip disarticulation and transpelvic amputation. I also have a specialist interest in use of acupuncture in the management of phantom limb phenomena.
I am the physiotherapist for the Intraosseous Transcutanoeus Amputation Prosthesis (ITAP) clinical trial and have experience of osseo-integration rehabilitation for both transfemoral and transhumeral amputees.
I am the Lead Physiotherapist for the Amputee, Sarcoma and Adult Orthopaedic teams and provide leadership, support and supervision for 14 members of staff.
I am an active member of BACPAR (British Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Amputee Rehabilitation) and have held the posts of Regional Representative for North Thames and Clinical Interest Group Liaison Officer. In addition, I have organised and run a number of day courses and national conferences. I was part of the group critically appraising the literature for the
development of guidelines for the Pre and Post-operative Physiotherapy Management Of Adults with Lower Limb Amputation.
I was involved in the literature appraisal and construction of consensus questionnaire for the
BACPAR, Clinical Guidelines for the Pre and Post-operative Physiotherapy Management of Adults with Lower Limb Amputations. Published 2006
I joined Somek and Associates in 2007 as a Physiotherapy expert, and I accept instructions from
both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the
medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
