Registered Nurse

RGN, Renal Nurse, ENB 998, ENB 934

  • Renal nursing
  • General and Surgical ward nursing

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1984. My specialist field is renal. I predominantly practise clinically in the haemodialysis field and have held a renal managerial position for the last 20 years. I manage outpatient units and care for pre dialysis, peritoneal dialysis and transplant patients.

In my current role I routinely prescribe for out patient haemodialysis patients /pre dialysis erythropoietin and peritoneal dialysis regimes. I work autonomously with regard to decision making and implementation of policies/procedures in assessing care delivery. I provide leadership and guidance to registered and non registered nurses and act as a role model and provide expert advice and education to nursing staff and patients and other health care professionals as required, along with mentoring registered nurses undertaking post registration courses. I ensure policies and procedures/protocols are in place and adhered to and continually monitor the service through audit and assist with research projects on the units.

I have attended a case at the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have personal experience of giving witness evidence in civil court. I have also supported nurses through NMC hearings and inquests and provide them with reflection following critical incidents and through periods of supervised practice.

I undertake investigations of serious untoward incidents in renal, medicine and critical care clinical business units and investigate renal and critical care staff management cases internal to my workplace and those that occur within the private provider units to the renal area in which I currently work.

I have in-depth knowledge of
• cannulation and extravasation injury.
• pressure area care and the prevention of pressure sores
• falls management and prevention of falls

I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
