I am a Registered Mental Health Nurse with significant experience of working in NHS Mental Health and Substance Misuse services. I have held senior nursing leadership roles within Psychiatric Inpatient services, Psychiatric Intensive Care (PICU), Community Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Treatment services.

My specialist areas of expertise are:
• Acute Mental Health Care (Risk Assessment, Seclusion, Therapeutic Observations, Coercion and Restraint, Mental Health Act Section 17 Leave MHA).
• Suicide, attempted suicide and serious incidents of harm.
• Substance Misuse and Addictions.
• Dual Diagnosis (Mental Health and Substance Misuse comorbidity).
• Community Mental Health Care.

In my current practice, I am an Independent Healthcare Consultant specialising in improving quality and safety in Mental Health and Substance Misuse services. My work includes undertaking Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations into serious incidents of harm such as suicide, attempted suicide, deliberate self harm, safeguarding and/or care quality concerns that have resulted in harm or have the potential to cause harm. I undertake thematic review of incidents to identify the common themes and trends that link them, and other clinical care and workforce reviews.

I am a Specialist Advisor for Mental Health for the Care and Quality Commission (CQC) and I participate in CQC regulatory inspections to provide specialist clinical advice regarding mental health and substance misuse treatment in order that the CQC’s judgements are informed by up to date and credible clinical and professional knowledge and experience.

I have a special interest in Suicide Prevention, and I facilitate training to staff working in Health, Social Care, Public and Third Sector services on assessing risk of suicide, response and intervention when dealing with someone in crisis.

I accept instruction from both Claimant and Defendant solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under Civil procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to expert witnesses.
