Introduction
Having qualified as a General Nurse in 2001, I spent the next three years working in a variety of clinical areas including burns, vascular medicine, general and vascular surgery, emergency medicine and intensive care. Since 2004 I have specialised in the field of uro-oncology and currently work as a uro-ocology nurse practitioner at Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust and Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust. I commenced this post as a training post at Band 6 and developed into Band 7 and Band 8. I am the key worker for all uro-oncology patients and am a key member of MDT at both local and regional level. I work closely with the consultants and patients to provide an effective uro-oncology service. I am an extended practitioner in a number of key modalities including Nurse Prescribing, Trans-rectal ultrasound and prostate biopsy.
I have a two nurse led cancer raised PSA clinic and a haematuria clinic. I see patients independently, perform physical assessment and history taking and arrange any necessary imaging / investigations. I also run an intravesical chemotherapy and immunotherapy clinic for patients with bladder cancer. I have also developed a nurse led one stop raised PSA clinic and provide a nurse led one-stop TRUS biopsy service. In addition I run a nurse led telephone follow up clinic for patients with stable prostate cancer and I run a nurse-led metastatic prostate cancer follow-up clinic. I also undertake regular ad hoc work covering for the senior nurse in this busy independent travel clinic. My role includes giving advice on travel vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis in the clinic, as well as running nursing issues in the absence of the manager.
I have written a number of papers in my field and regularly make presentations both nationally and internationally. I am on a number of Advisory Panels, currently a Clinical Reviewer for various Journals and a visiting lecturer at Middlesex University. I am an advisor to the Urology Nurse Association Hong Kong.
In addition, I also undertake medico legal work for Somek and Associates. I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
