Introduction
I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1988 after which I specialised in Intensive Care Nursing until 1992. From November 1992 I have specialised in oncology and palliative care nursing and I have been employed by the Hospice of St Frances, Berkhamsted as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care, since 1999.
At the hospice we care for patients with a wide range of life threatening illnesses, including heart disease, lung disease, neurological illness and cancer. Care is provided in different areas including the Inpatient Unit, Day Hospice and Outpatient clinics, as well as in the home, in local hospitals and nursing homes. The Hospice is considered as a hub of excellence in palliative care and one of the strategic objectives that I am involved with, is to collaborate with, support, and educate, other professionals working with patients facing the end of their lives. I support and provide symptom control advice to patients with life threatening illness at home with the aim of maintaining quality of life. I am also involved with supporting families through these difficult times.
I participate in the formal education programmes based at St Francis and in local settings throughout our catchment area as well as clinically supervising our own staff, both nursing and others.
I also act as an Expert Witness in Palliative Care Nursing for Somek and Associates. I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
