Introduction
I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1990 and initially worked in Accident & Emergency for 5 years before specialising in Intensive Care Nursing. I have worked in the ITU environment since 1995, initially as a Staff Nurse and rising to a Senior Sister. Since 2004, I have worked as a Clinical Nurse Educator in ITU / HDU at the William Harvey Hospital, East Kent Hospitals University Trust. I have responsibility for the development of 40–50 staff of all grades to ensure high standards of care are given, and staff are competent in carrying out their role. I also work clinically in my own right on a regular basis, either nursing at the bedside or managing the shift. I have a particular interest in competency assessments, acute renal failure and equipment competencies and documentation.

My key responsibilities are:
♦ Working clinically with staff teaching theory, practical and management skills and assessing competencies in all aspects of care in ITU / HDU. This includes patient assessment, invasive and non-invasive ventilation, inotropes, renal replacement therapy (haemofiltration), Cardiac output monitoring (LiDCO), and care of septic patient.
♦ Development of competencies for all grades of staff, including the development of equipment competencies and assessing staff accordingly
♦ Development of guidelines for practice.
♦ Assessment of staff in drug administration.
♦ Development of action plans for staff not meeting required standards.
♦ Classroom teaching includes: Cardiovascular assessment, monitoring and management, acute renal failure – recognition and management.
♦ Design and teaching of in-house paediatric workshops – preparing staff in the short term care of Paediatric patients
♦ Facilitation and planning of student placements.
♦ Mentoring staff on specialist courses.
♦ Arranging staff training.
♦ Project management to implement Health Care Assistants (HCA’s) band 3, into the ITU (successfully achieved in my previous post).

I accept instructions from both Claimant and Defendant Solicitors and Insurers. I have undergone formal training in the medico-legal process and am fully aware of my responsibilities under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) pertaining to Expert Witnesses.
